Master Silversmith, 1822-1827
T
his exquisitely elegant antique French sterling silver mustard pot is designed in the Neoclassic style and is offered with its original glass liner. The upper border is rimmed with a border of stylized lotus leaves or “
Feuilles
d’eau
” and the cover is topped by a ribbed finial. The two handles surrounded by leaves
curve inwards
and terminate with backwards looking lions. The body of the piece is made up of four cutwork palm fronds and the foot is ringed by two rows of beading above a circular base designed with alternating acanthus leaves, palm fronds and flowers. This sits on a square platform surrounded by a classical interlaced border and supported by four lion’s claw feet surmounted by lions’ heads flanked by stylized flowers and laurel leaves. It bears the French hallmarks used in Paris between 1819 and 1838: the “
Poinçon
de
Titre
”, consisting of an old man’s head, the “
Vieillard
”, also called “
Michel-
Ange
”, indicating that silver content is higher than 950, along with the “
Poinçon
de
grosse
garantie
”, consisting of a head of Ceres in profile turned to the left, certifying that the pieces were officially verified and produced in Paris. It also bears the maker’s mark of
Charles Louis
Dupré
, master silversmith in Paris between 1822 and 1827, and who specialized in fine silver tableware. This piece is in excellent condition with the exception of signs of normal age and use. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page. This magnificent mustard pot, hand crafted two centuries ago, will be a prestigious addition to your table setting or your collection.
